Tokyo Air-Rail Link Will Not Open for 2020 Olympics

(ATR) A planned rail link between Haneda Airport and downtown Tokyo won’t be ready for the 2020 Summer Olympics.

The Nikkei Asian Review reports Japan’s tourism ministry said on Wednesday the connection won’t be ready before 2021.

According to the news agency, officials determined "constructing a new line crossing Japan Railway's existing tracks will be more challenging than initially expected."

The proposed connection will carry passengers as far into the city as the Shibuya station, one of the most important stations in Tokyo.

Haneda International Airport is one of Tokyo’s two international airports. Narita, the second station, is considerably further away from the heart of Tokyo than Haneda. Currently, only the Keikyu metro network and Tokyo Monorail, which runs for less than 20 kilometers, stop at Haneda.
