Police in the Chinese capital have recently seized nearly 30,000 counterfeit versions of the cuddly Beijing 2008 Olympics mascots known as "Fuwa", some made with toxic materials, in the largest haul of such fakes to date, as authorities warned consumers to take care when purchasing the dolls to avoid any health risks. Rio 2016 organizers will have help stamping out crime around the Games.

Interpol signed an agreement to work with the next Summer Games host to combat illegal betting and counterfeit tickets and merchandise.

Head of Rio 2016 security Luiz Fernando Correa commended the body’s work in the past after signing the agreement at Interpol’s annual meeting in Colombia.

"Interpol has a policy of protecting the integrity of sport and that includes addressing various illegal activities," Correa told AFP.

The two sides have been in negotiations on the agreement for almost a year.
