(ATR) Skier Lindsey Vonn will be one of the athletes most responsible for the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics being a popular success, if she recovers from a knee injury.
Evidence of her popularity can be found on social media. On Facebook, Vonn has more than 605,000 likes and on Twitter, she has nearly 185,000 followers—10 times more than Bode Miller and triple that of Aksel Lund Svindal, both the most well-known male skiers.
However, during the alpine skiing world championships in Austria this February, Vonn tore her ACL, MCL and broke her tibia in her right knee, requiring an airlift to a hospital. "I have plenty of time to be ready for Sochi," she said at the time.She is the most successful American skier in history, and her gold medal in the downhill event in Vancouver made her an international media sensation.If NHL players are barred from playing in the Sochi Olympics, Vonn, 28, would easily be the highest-profile athlete of the Games, male or female.
