(ATR) A pair of gold medals in swimming at the 1964 Olympics propelled a 17 year-old Donna de Varona into a life well-connected to the Olympic Movement.
The cover girl for the news magazines of 1964, the San Diego, Ca native left the sport to begin a career as a sports broadcaster, covering 17 Olympics.
Among her non-broadcasting highlights, de Varona chaired the organizing committee for the 1999 FIFA Women’s World Cup and was a founder and first president of the Women’s Sport Foundation.
She is a board member of Special Olympics International and is a member of the IOC Commission on Women and Sport.
