Golden 25 Women: Donna de Varona - Teen Olympic Champ, Broadcast Pioneer

(ATR) From teen phenom to the TV screen, Donna de Varona has blazed her trail to success. She is the latest entry for the Around the Rings Golden 25 for Women, presented by Ernst & Young.

(ATR) A pair of gold medals in swimming at the 1964 Olympics propelled a 17 year-old Donna de Varona into a life well-connected to the Olympic Movement.

The cover girl for the news magazines of 1964, the San Diego, Ca native left the sport to begin a career as a sports broadcaster, covering 17 Olympics.

Among her non-broadcasting highlights, de Varona chaired the organizing committee for the 1999 FIFA Women’s World Cup and was a founder and first president of the Women’s Sport Foundation.

She is a board member of Special Olympics International and is a member of the IOC Commission on Women and Sport.
