Saint John, NB, Canada – Canada beat Sweden by 9-6 in Thursday evening's last session of round-robin play at the Ford World Women's Curling Championship in Saint John, Canada, to rank at the top of the table, with ten wins from eleven games.
Canada now faces second-placed Switzerland - who sat out the session and had already recorded nine wins - in Friday evening's Page one versus two Play-off game, with the winner going direct to the final and the loser moving onto the sole semi-final, with a further chance of making the gold medal final game on Sunday.
At the same time as Canada's win, Russia lost by 7-8 to the Czech Republic and Korea beat Scotland by 10-5.
These results mean that Sweden, Russia and Korea all share the same ‘won eight, lost three’ record and, when the results among these teams are considered, Russia rank third and go straight to the Page three versus four Play-off game.
Meanwhile, Korea and Sweden will play a tie-breaker to determine fourth place, with the winner of that also going to the Page three versus four game.
The eventual Page three versus four winners will go into the semi-final to play against the Page one versus two losers, and after that, the Page three versus four losers will play the semi-final losers for bronze medals while the Page one versus two winners and the semi-final winners will play for gold medals and the world title.
In the fourth game of this session, Denmark beat Latvia by 10-4 to secure a joint tenth-place ranking, alongside Scotland.
