Beyond the sapphire seas and sun-kissed beaches, the palm fronds and rum bars, the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games (GC2018) Queen’s Baton has unearthed a Caribbean rarely seen.
In Dominica, the Baton witnessed a rejuvenation of indigenous culture. After many decades, a Kalinago revival is taking place, as a younger generation discovers its noble heritage. Mabrika, the Kalinago people said, greeting the Baton with pleasure.
And who knew Barbadians were avid sports fans? Designated as the Year of Sport, in 2017 not a month will go by without a world-class event taking place in Barbados. There are options aplenty: cricket, hockey, tennis, marathon, surfing, golf, yoga, cycling, darts, rugby, sailing, rally driving, and even a ninja obstacle event.
Today on the tiny island nation of St Kitts and Nevis the Queen’s message will pass through the hands of batonbearers who were also recently honoured by a royal visit from Prince Harry, in November last year.

Next on the Baton’s itinerary are Anguilla, British Virgin Islands, and the Caribbean’s track and field heartland of Jamaica.
