USA Wins IIHF Women's World Champs
Revenge is sweet for USA, winners of the 2013 IIHF Women's World Championship.
After falling to Canada on home soil last year in Vermont, the Americans flipped the script Monday in Ottawa, edging the Canadians on their own ice by a score of 3-2.
"I feel like it’s revenge," said Amanda Kessel, who broke a 2-2 tie early in the third period with what turned out to be the winning goal.
"To come into Canada and win the gold medal is unbelievable. We used our speed and worked hard. It gives us great confidence heading to Sochi."
The title is USA’s fifth IIHF Women's World Championship and third straight in the year before an Olympics.
Russia finished third in Ottawa and Finland fourth.
BOA Signs IMG Deal
The British Olympic Association announced on Wednesday that IMG Licensing will serve as its official licensing partner.
Under the agreement, IMG will create "a comprehensive licensing program" for Team GB apparel and products.
"Driven by the success of Team GB at London 2012, interest and support for the Team GB brand has never been greater," said Leah Walsh, Marketing Manager for the BOA. "Post-Games, research indicated that awareness of the Team GB brand throughout the UK was at a 99 percent level, which illustrates the strength of the Team GB brand and its potential for the future.
"For millions of fans throughout the United Kingdom, licensed products provide an opportunity to connect with, and show their support for, Team GB."
Liu Out for Season
Chinese hurdler Liu Xiang will miss another season due to injury.
The 2004 gold medallist in the 110m hurdles hurt his Achilles tendon at the London Olympics, and his coach said he is still recovering.
"We expect a full recovery, but he cannot take part in any training now, and therefore he will probably miss all meets this year," Sun Haiping was quoted as telling the China Daily.
Liu hurt his Achilles tendon at the preliminary rounds of the 110m hurdles at the Beijing Olympics.
