Turkey’s athletes made history this week as the national U20 basketball team and the national women’s volleyball team won gold medals for the first time in European Championships.

Turkey’s U20 basketball team won against Spain in the final minute of the European Championship final in Crete, while the women’s volleyball team beat Germany in the final of the CEV Women Volleyball European Championships this weekend.

This news comes a day after Hasan Emre Musluoğlu was awarded another gold medal for Turkey after completing the Samsung Bosphorus Cross-Continental Swimming Race in less than 42 minutes.

President of the Turkish Olympic Committee, Professor Dr. Uğur Erdener, said:

"This has been a truly fantastic week for sport in Turkey. Yesterday, as Istanbul hosted international athletes at the world-famous Samsung Bosphorus Cross-Continental Race, our own Turkish champions brought gold medals home for the very first time in U20 basketball and women’s volleyball. This shows that Turkey is fast becoming a major player in international sport. The Turkish Olympic Committee is very proud of all of our athletes. This week, we are a city full of sport and a country full of champions."

Istanbul also hosted the TEB BNP Paribas Istanbul Cup last week, where Caroline Wozniacki secured her 22nd WTA title after defeating Roberta Vinci in the final match of the competition.
