(ATR) Toronto Mayor John Tory met with Canadian Olympic Committee president Marcel Aubut to learn more about the Olympic bidding process.
The two met at the Toronto city hall along with Bob Richardson, chief operating officer of Toronto’s 2008 Olympic bid. Tory is gathering as much information as he can before committing to bid for the 2024 Summer Games.
"The mayor was getting briefed on the changes to the bid process recently announced by the IOC as well as background on previous bid processes. This is part of the consultation and due diligence the mayor committed to undertake," Tory’s spokesman Amanda Galbraith said.
Toronto is fresh off completing the largest Pan Am Games in history and the first international multi-sport event in Toronto since the 1930 Commonwealth Games.
An Olympic bid from the city would utilize the improved infrastructure, new venues created for the Pan Ams and the experience gained from hosting a major international event.
The Parapan Am Games are now underway in Toronto. Tory will likely wait until the Parapan Am Games have concluded on Saturday before making his final decision.
Marcel Aubut has given his full support for a Toronto bid to host the 2024 Games and says he will do everything in the power of his office to make it a reality.
Toronto made a bid for the Summer Games in 2008 but finished in second place behind Beijing. Tory is currently studying this bid attempt and the previous bid attempt to host the Games in 1996.
The mayor and Canadian Olympic Committee have until September 15 to officially submit a bid to the IOC.
