(ATR) The president of the South Korean Olympic Committee is leading PyeongChang 2018, Around the Rings has learned.
Jin Sun Kim, president of POCOG, announced his shock resignation on Monday. In the meantime, KOC president Jung Haeng Kim is taking the reigns, Minji Kang, POCOG’s spokesperson told ATR.
Kim’s term as president of POCOG was supposed to last until October. It is unclear how long the new president will lead POCOG.
POCOG has been rocked with three high-profile issues in the past month.
First, Dong Hoo Moon, the organizing committee’s secretary general, announced his resignation, allegedly for health issues but South Korean media reports suggested there may have been political issues at play. Then on Tuesday, South Korea’s Board of Audit announced they had completed a review of POCOG’s finances and management.
POCOG did not respond to multiple requests from ATR seeking comment on the audit or any impact it may have had on President Kim’s departure.
South Korea’s Yonhap News Agency reports a Korean sports ministry official says the two were not linked.
On Monday, the IOC told Around the Rings following President Kim’s resignation, "We held our last project review meeting with POCOG at the end of June and developed with them a clear roadmap of activities until the end of the year. We have full confidence that these activities will be delivered by the POCOG team in a timely manner and using their existing processes.
"We continue to work closely with them on their preparations for the Games."
