(ATR) Rio 2016 says the goal of running test events is to "make mistakes" and learn from apply learning from them to future events.
One year after holding a test event for sailing, Rio 2016 will organize their second event for triathlon and para-triathlon beginning on Sunday. The timing of the event was made so that athletes participating will get a sense for the exact conditions that they will potentially see in 2016.
"We are here to test, test, test, and we are not expecting to deliver a perfect event [a year] before the Games," Rodrigo Garcia, Rio 2016 sport director, said a press conference.
"We are really aiming with our team to work with integration between us, all stakeholders, media, and national Olympic and Paralympic committees. We are here to make mistakes, and we will learn from them, and this is what we are expecting."
After the triathlon and para-triathlon event on Aug. 1-2 at Fort Copacabana, Rio 2016 will have 42 more Olympic and Paralympic test events. The goal for the events is to test the specialized teams Rio 2016 has hired for each sport, along with the volunteers that have been trained to handle each event.
"The organizing committee has doubled in size," Garcia added.
"It is fundamental for us and we have established everything we want to test with precise details. If something goes wrong, we can test again, and we can continue to test in the coming weeks. We have plenty of opportunities to retest and refine our operations."
An added bonus for the upcoming test event is that it will serve as an Olympic qualifier for triathlon, bringing the world’s best athletes to Rio. National Olympic committees will earn placements for athletes at the 2016 Games through the results of the event.
"Of course, we cannot forget that we are here for the athletes," Garcia said.
"We are excited to receive you guys here in Rio and we hope we can deliver a nice scenario for the Games."
