(ATR) The leader of the Olympic Movement in the Americas is "recovering very well" from a medical operation.
Mario Vazquez Rana, president of PASO, the organization for the 41 national Olympic committees of the Americas, announced over the weekend that he was too ill to lead next week’s PASO General Assembly in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. As a result, the meeting had to be cancelled. The meeting was scheduled for Sept. 8-10 in the Mexican resort city.
At the time, Around the Rings was told he was recovering from lung surgery.
However, Jimena Saldana, secretary general of PASO, tells ATR that Vazquez Rana "is receiving attention for a condition of the gastrointestinal system and the recovery process is going very well."
Vazquez Rana, 82, has led PASO for 39 years.
Under PASO statutes, if the president is incapacitated or otherwise unable to fulfill his duties, the first vice president assumes responsibility for the organization. Saldana said that was not done in this case because Vazquez Rana has chaired every PASO general assembly and he "wishes to be present" for the 52nd general assembly.
Saldana said a new date for the general assembly will be announced "shortly" and that it will take place in Puerto Vallarta.
