Pakistan Supports IOC-Sanctioned Olympic Federation

(ATR) Pakistan will support the Pakistan Olympic Association (POA) instead of a rival federation.

Since Syed Arif Hasan’s re-election as POA president in February 2012, two Olympic governing bodies have been operating in Pakistan: the POA, which receives support from the IOC, and a body headed by Akram Sahi, which receives help from the national government and the Pakistan Sports Board.

The IOC has repeatedly threatened the Pakistan government with suspension if they fail to support the POA. Now, with only three days until the IOC Executive Board meeting, Prime Minister Mian Nawaz Sharif has decided to comply with the IOC’s wishes.

"The prime minister has directed us to take a decision in the best national interest so that Pakistan's sports are not affected at the international level," interprovincial coordination minister Riaz Hussain Pirzada said, referring to Pakistan’s participation in the upcoming Commonwealth Games.

"We have taken this decision in the best interest of the country and to secure the future of 66 percent youth of the country."

The Pakistan Sports Board plans on working in cooperation with the Pakistan Olympic Association.
