(ATR) Carlos Neuhaus re-appeared this Wednesday on Peruvian television to send another message of optimism but this time it had nothing to do with the Pan American Games.
The former head of the Lima 2019 Organizing Committee was appointed the day before by the Peru President Martín Vizcarra as spokesperson for the Vaccine Command.
Given the situation facing Peruvian society due to the coronavirus, a group of senior executives and representatives of the Ministries of Health, Foreign Affairs, and Economy and Finance have organized Vaccine Command to help manage the acquisition and application of vaccines against COVID-19.
Among those people is Neuhaus, who will lead the coordination with the main laboratories in the world working on important advances in the development of the vaccine against the deadly virus.
Peru is the sixth on the list of countries with the highest number of infected worldwide, behind the United States, Brazil, India, Russia and the United Kingdom.
Peru, with 33 million inhabitants, has had more than 288,000 infections and 9,860 deaths from COVID-19.
Neuhaus said he hoped that as soon as a vaccine becomes a reality, Peru "being in the Top Ten of the most affected countries in the world" would mean it would be given priority access to the treatment.
Villa Panamericana, a complex of seven 20-story towers that housed the athletes for Lima 2019, was turned into an emergency hospital in March due to the pandemic.
Neuhaus, former president of the national surfing federation, headed the Lima 2019 Organizing Committee for almost three years to bring it to fruition amid political and economic instabilities
Panam Sports described the Peruvian Pan American Games as "the best ever."
Last December Neuhaus had assumed the position of executive president of the Association of Shopping Centers of Peru.
