The experimental solar-powered plane landed in California having completed a mammoth 62 hour flight over the Pacific Ocean from Hawaii – the ninth of thirteen legs on its record breaking round-the-world trip. The innovative project was conceived in Switzerland and brings together industry experts from around the world.

LA 2024 Chairman Casey Wasserman said: "As we invite the world to follow the sun, the Solar Impulse II is an exciting and inspirational project for everyone at LA 2024. The LA 2024 team is always looking at ways of harnessing California’s leadership in technology and innovation to imagine what’s next. The Solar Impulse II is a perfect example of how through innovation and collaboration we can push boundaries and find ways of developing a future driven by clean and renewable energy. Delivering on the sustainable principles of Olympic Agenda 2020 is a key priority of our bid and with year-round sun we are ideally positioned to stage the first ever energy positive Games, leaving a lasting environmental legacy for our city and the Olympic Movement."
