(ATR) The Executive Committee of the Pan American Weightlifting Federation (PAWF) elected an Athletes Commission on Monday.

It is the first Athletes Commission for the continental body.

David Samayoa of Canada was chosen as its president.

María Fernanda Valdéz (Chile), Keidomar Vallenilla (Venezuela), Seledina Nieve (Ecuador) and Erika Ortega (Panama) complete the group.

Around the Rings has learned that the decision to choose Samayoa to lead the panel was influenced by the fact that Canada is the only one among the five countries represented on the commission that does not also have a member on the Executive Committee of the federation.

The PAWF had solicited candidates from all the national federations. A total of 11 proposals were received.

Samayoa, whosefather was a Guatemalan national champion in the 1980's,is an active athlete and has been a member of Team Canada in the Pan American and World Championships.

His most recent competition was the online Uzbekistan Cup this past weekend.

Representing the athletes, the Canadian will virtually attend his first meeting of the PAWF executive this Thursday.
