(ATR) The FIFA Ethics Committee calls for a lifetime ban for Rafael Callejas, citing five ethics violations.
Investigatory chamber chairman Cornel Borbely concluded his investigation into the former Honduran President and Honduran Football Association president regarding allegations of illegal payments Callejas received from sports marketing companies.
The Ethics Committee says Callejas violated general rules of conduct, loyalty, duty of disclosure, conflicts of interest and bribery and corruption.
Callejas pleaded guilty to these allegations of racketeering, conspiracy and wire fraud to a federal judge in New York on March 28.
The former Honduran football chief testified to receiving bribes from marketing companies for rights to the Honduran national team matches which he in turn paid to delegates of the Honduran Football Association to ensure his reelection. Callejas led the national federation for 13 years.
Each of the charges he pleaded guilty to could result in 20-year prison sentences. Callejas is due to be sentenced on Jan. 27, 2017.
FIFA still presumes Callejas’ innocence until an official decision is taken by the adjudicatory chamber of the Ethics Committee. No date for the decision has been announced.
