(ATR) The Commonwealth Games Federation needs a new Chief Executive Officer following the resignation of David Grevemberg.
Grevemberg had served as CEO since November 2014, arriving at the CGF after a successful stint as the head of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.
In 2015, he oversaw the development and launch of the organization’s strategic plan, Transformation 2022, that changed the focus of the organization from oversight of its major Games every four years to a movement focused on legacy, impact and community benefit.
He also led the 2019 refresh of the plan, following extensive consultations with members and stakeholders in the CGF.
Speaking on the ATRadio podcast in May of 2020, Grevemberg said "If you look at the modern Commonwealth charter, where we have these 71 nations that unite under this charter, that charter upholds some of the highest standards and ideals around human rights, good governance, peace, prosperity and the Games become fantastic manifestation of shifting the dial and pushing some of that forward.
"I’m really proud to say that I really feel that the Commonwealth sport movement is probably more relevant than it ever has been."
Grevemberg led a team that supported the Host Cities and Organizing Committees of the Samoa 2015 and Bahamas 2017 Commonwealth Youth Games, and Australia’s 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast.
His departure comes ahead of the next Commonwealth Games in 2022.
"The upcoming Commonwealth Games in Birmingham are tracking positively and I am confident will be another milestone event for the movement," Grevemberg said in a statement on Feb. 9 announcing his departure.
"After much reflection, I feel that now is the right moment to pass the baton. This will give a successor time to support and experience next year’s Games in Birmingham and plan and oversee the next significant phase of the Federation’s history, post-Transformation 2022."
His successor will have to secure a host for the 2026 edition of the Commonwealth Games.
The Federation will now begin the process of recruiting for a new CEO. Grevemberg’s last day is March 5.
