(ATR) Athletes and coaches received $1.8 million for their efforts at the Sochi 2014 Olympics.
The funds come from the Canadian Olympic Committee’s Athlete Excellence Fund and Coach Reward Program. The Royal Bank of Canada presented checks to the athletes and coaches at the Hilton Lac-Leamy in Gatineau, Quebec.
"This support is an added reward after all the hard work and grueling hours spent training on the ice," said Caroline Ouellette, four-time Olympic gold medalist, said at the banquet.
RBC gave athletes $20,000 for winning a gold medal, $15,000 for silver, and $10,000 for bronze. Performance grants of $5,000 are also awarded during non-Olympic years.
"Thank you to my coach for all of their support and to RBC for this generous gift. It means the world to me."
