Two heavyweights - Hamburg mayor Olaf Scholz and Wladimir Klitschko, who has five heavyweight boxing titles - announced their support of a Hamburg bid for the 2024 Summer Olympics.

Scholz said if the DOSB asked Hamburg to bid, a referendum would be held next year to secure approval from Hamburg’s citizens.

He added that Hamburg has a strong history organizing sporting events.

Speaking to German media, Klitschko offered his support for Hamburg, "provided that my hometown Kiev does not bid."

He also said his brother, Vitali, a former heavyweight boxing champion, would also be willing to support a Hamburg bid.

The Klitschkos, who were born in Ukraine, trained and lived for several years in Hamburg, fighting several marquee fights in the German city.

Mayor: St. Petersburg Is Ready

St. Petersburg mayor Georgy Poltavchenko says the city is capable of hosting the 2024 Summer Olympics.

Russia’s ITAR-TASS news agency reports that Poltavchenko said: "In my opinion, the city has a very, very good chance to bid."

He said the city has 70 percent of the necessary infrastructure to host an Olympics.

The IOC will select a 2024 host city in 2017.

Bids are expected from the United States, France, South Africa, and others.
