The OCA’s third edition of the Asian Youth Games will be held in Shantou city on the eastern coast of Guangdong province, China, in 2021 on dates to be confirmed.

Shantou was awarded the hosting rights at the 38th OCA General Assembly in Bangkok, Thailand, and signed a Memorandum of Understanding for the host city contract.

Shantou officials said the Asian Youth Games would bring the vitality and vigour of international youth to this famous old treaty port and one of five Special Economic Zones of China. The city has a population of 5.6 million.

Eighteen gymnasiums and stadiums already exist in the city, including an Olympic-size swimming pool, and minimal construction will be required to host the AYG.

The OCA’s first AYG was in Singapore in 2009 and was a big success due to the athletes and officials being accommodated in adjacent city centre hotels with a connecting mezzanine floor for displays and exhibitions. Singapore 2009 also served as a full-scale dress rehearsal for Singapore 2010 – the inaugural Youth Olympic Games of the International Olympic Committee.

The same can be said of the second OCA Asian Youth Games in Nanjing, China in 2013 – the year before the second IOC YOG in the same city.

The 3rd AYG in Shantou in 2021 will end an eight-year absence for the OCA’s youth-focused multi-sport event. In the most recent AYG, 2,404 athletes from all 45 NOCs competed in 122 events in 16 sports in Nanjing.
