(ATR) New flight paths over Tokyo will be announced next spring as the government prepares to welcome up to 40 million tourists for the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Twenty-six of 50 international slots available at Tokyo’s Haneda airport have been awarded to seven countries.
The new slots will be serviced daily beginning in March. The government says it plans to increase international flights from 60,000 to 99,000 before the Games.
China, Russia, Australia, Finland, India, Italy, and Turkey have won the Haneda slots.
A slot has also been given to the Scandinavian region with Denmark or Sweden expected to land the opening.
The United States secured the remaining 24 slots.
China will receive eight slots, while Russia and Australia get four slots each. The remaining countries will have two slots each.
With the exception of China, the slots will go in service for the first time from 6 a.m to 10:55 p.m.
Half of the 50 slots will be given to Japanese airlines; All Nippon Airways obtained 13.5 and Japan Airlines receiving 11.5
Haneda -- the world’s fifth busiest airport -- is located about 15km from central Tokyo, which makes it more convenient for travelers than Narita.
Haneda was Tokyo’s original international airport and was used during the 1964 and 1972 Olympics.
