(ATR) U.S. President George Bush says he is “fired up” about going to the Beijing Olympics. He hosted a send off ceremony for athletes heading to the Olympics at the White house Rose Garden.

Twenty-two Olympians and Paralympians, including Jennie Finch, Kerri Walsh and Scott Winkler, attended event.

“Team USA shows the great power of sports to bring people together. No sports event unites people like the Olympics. Today, we honor skill and discipline. We’re looking forward to rooting for you in Beijing,” Bush said.

"You will convey our nation's most cherished values. As ambassadors of liberty, you will represent America's love for freedom and our regard for human rights and human dignity to other athletes and to the people of China."

Bush will travel to Beijing for the Opening Ceremony and has received criticism because of China’s human rights record. However, some 80 heads of state will be at the ceremony.

“I'm fired up to go. I can't wait to salute our athletes, and I can't wait to share in the joy of your triumphs. And so today we send you off with congratulations on the success you have already achieved, and on the accomplishments we know will be yours in Beijing,” Bush said.

Bush’s father, former President George H. W. Bush, will also attend the Games.

Olympians Bob Beamon, Bart Conner, Jackie Joyner-Kersee and Shannon Miller will dine with the Olympians at the White House in the evening. Bush hosted a similar event for athletes competing in the 2006 Winter Games in Torino.
